이노래가 발표되었을때 저명한 R&B 가수이자
흑인인권운동가였던 Mavis Staples 여사는
처음 들었을때의 충격을 이렇게 전했습니다.
I could not understand how a young white man could write something which
captured the frustration and s of black people so powerfully.
(어떻게 젊은 백인청년이 흑인들의 좌절과 염원을 이렇게 잘 표현한
노래를 만들수 있었는지 이해할 수 없다)
하지만 당시 이노래를 듣고 큰 감동을 받은 흑인은
Mavis Staples 여사뿐이 아니었습니다.
그도 그럴것이 이 노래의 전신이 미 흑인들의 대표적 영가인
We Shall Overcome이기 때문입니다.
이는 Bob Dylan이 한 잡지사와의 인터뷰에서도 얘기했습니다.
"'Blowin' in the Wind' has always been a spiritual.
I took it off a song called 'No More Auction Block' –
that's a spiritual and 'Blowin' in the Wind' follows the same feeling."
(Blowin' in the Wind'는 영가입니다. 나는 그 아이디어를
'No More Auction Block'이라는노래에서 따왔습니다.
그런데 그노래는 흑인영가였으며 "Blowin' in the Wind'도 같은
정서의 노래입니다
몇몇 음악연구가들은 노래제목이 Woody Guthrie의 자서전 한대목에서
따왔을 것이라고 얘기하고 있습니다.
그내용은
Guthrie compared his political sensibility to newspapers
blowing in the winds of New York City streets
(Woody Guthrie는 자신의 정치적감각을 뉴욕거리에 부는
바람에 휫날리는 신문에 비유했다)는 것입니다.
그리고 가사내용은 구약성서 에스겔 12장 1,2절에 나오는
"They have eyes to see but see not; ears to hear, but hear not."를
인용한 것이라는 견해가 많습니다.
이 노래는 많은 가수들이 커버를 했는데 그중 Peter, Paul and Mary
버젼이 가장 인기를 많이 끌었습니다.
때문에 이곡이 그들 원곡이라고 생각하는 사람들도 많습니다.
들어보면 Peter, Paul and Mary 버젼이 훨씬 좋은게 사실입니다.
이노래는 발표후 줄곧 흑인인권 운동가나 베트남전쟁 반대운동가로 많이
불려 데모송이라는 별명을 얻었습니다.
그리고 개신교와 캐톨릭에서도 집회송으로 사용되곤했습니다.
