조동사 2 (will, would)

"will"은 미래를 나타내는 조동사로서 이미 "시제"에서 설명해 놓았습니다.

때문에 이곳에서는 "will"의 과거형인 "would"에 대해서만 말씀드리겠습니다.

과거에 반복적으로 일어난 일을 표현합니다.

My dad would sing to us every evening.

아빠는 저녁마다 우리에게 노래를 불러주곤 했다.

We would meet every Thursday morning.

우리는 목요일 만나 만났었다.

He would always turn and wave at the end of the street.

그는 항상 길 끝에서 몸을 돌려 손을 흔들곤 했다.

We would visit Grandma every morning at the farm.

우리는 매일 아침 농장에 있는 할머니를 방문하고 했었다.

위 문장들은 같은 의미를 가진 준조동사 "used to"로 바꾸어 쓸수 있습니다. My dad would sing to us every evening. My dad used to sing to us every evening. He would always turn and wave at the end of the street. He used to always turn and wave at the end of the street. We would visit Grandma every morning at the farm. We used to visit Grandma every morning at the farm.

주의하셔야 할점은 반복되는 일이 아니거나 (머물러 있는 상태) 시간적 표현이 없는 과거습관에는 "would"를 사용하지 않습니다. I would live in Seoul when I was a kid. (틀린문장: 어릴때 서울에서 살았었다) I used to live in Seoul when I was a kid. (맞는 문장) I would play piano. (틀린문장: 피아노를 치곤했다) I used to play piano. (맞는문장) I would play piano every day. (맞는문장: 매일 피아노를 치곤했다)

과거 한시점에서 본 미래를 표현합니다.

He said he would see his brother tomorrow. 

그는 내일 동생을 만날것이라고 말했다.

They knew there would be trouble unless the report was finished by the next day.

그들은 리포트가 다음날까지 끝나지 않으면 어려움이 있을 것을 알고 있었다.

We realized it wouldn't be easy to find another secretary.

우리는 새로운 비서 찾는 일이 쉽지 않을 것이라는 것을 알았다.

When I was young I thought that in years to come I would be really tall.

어렸을 때 다가올 몇년안에 내가 정말 커질 것이라고 생각했다.

When I broke my leg, I thought I would never dance again.

과거 어느시점에서 바라본 미래의 의향을 나타냅니다.

그는 항상 그녀를 사랑하겠다고 했다.

그것을 하겠다는 사람이 한명도 남지 않았다.

I asked him to move his car but he said he wouldn't .

나는 그에게 차를 치워줄 것을 부탁했다. 하지만 그는 하지 않겠다고 말했다.

추측을 나타낼때도 사용됩니다.

​가정법 과거의 주절에 쓰입니다.

I wouldn't worry about it, if I were you. 

내가 너라면 걱정하지 않겠다.

 If I had enough money, I would buy a car. 

돈이 충분했으면 차를 샀을 것이다.

If we went to Chile, we’d have to go to Argentina as well. I’d love to see both.

칠레에 갔었다면,  아르젠티나도 가야했을 꺼야, 난 두 나라를 모두 보고싶었어.

읫 문장들은 의미는 현재이지만 '"will"을 사용하시면 안됩니다.. Would you like your steak well cooked? (O) Will you like your steak well cooked? (X) Would you mind introducing me to him?(O) Will you mind introducing me to him?(X) Would you rather pay by credit card?(O) Will you rather pay by credit card?(X) 👪 반면 아래 문장들은 "will"도 가능하지만 좀처럼 사용하지 않습니다. Will you make dinner? (가능하지만 약간 직설적) Would you make dinner? (부드러운 표현) Will you give me a wake-up call at 7 am, please? (가능하지만 약간 직설적) Would you mind giving me a wake-up call at 7 am, please? (부드러운 표현) Will you excuse me just one second? (가능하지만 약간 직설적) Would you excuse me just one second? (부드러운 표현)

부정문일 경우에는 좀처럼 되지 않는 일을 표현합니다.

He wouldn't listen to me.

문이 좀처럼 열리려 하지 않았다.

가정법 과거완료의 주절에 쓰입니다.

It would have been very boring to sit through the whole speech.

그 연설을 듣기위해 처음부터 끝까지 않아있는 것은 너무 지겨울 것 같아.

If we had left earlier, we would have been able to stop off for a coffee on the way.

우리가 좀더 일찍 출발 했으면 중간에 커피 한잔하기위해 잠깐 쉴수 있었을텐데.

If I'd had time, I would have gone to see Kim.

시간이 있었으면 김씨를 만나러 갔을텐데.

"would rather"와 같은 뜻이지만 많이 사용하지 않습니다.

차 한잔하시겠어요?  아니요 안 마시도록 하겠습니다.

I would sooner see him before it's too late. 
너무 늦기전에 그를 만나는 것이 좋겠다.

I’d sooner go to Spain. 
차라리 스페인으로 가겠다
