절이란 무엇인가?

절이란 문장을 얘기합니다.
하지만 그냥 문장이 아니라 하나의 문장이 다른 문장속에 들어가
하나의 품사와 같은 역할을 하는 것을 말합니다.
"구"와 비슷하지만 다른점은 "주어+동사"를 갖춘 완전한 문장이라는 것입니다. 
절에는 "명사절", "형용사절," "부사절"이 있습니다.

명사절

I know you are coming tomorrow.
난 네가 내일 온다는 것을 알고있다.
It is very important that they can solve the problem before it gets worse.
심각해지기 전에 그들이 그 문제를 풀수있는 것이 매우 중요하다.
Susan didn't say when she was going to pay back her debt.
스잔은 언제 그녀가 빗을 갚을수 있는지 얘기하지 않았다.
When he is able to come is critical for our decision.
언제 그가 올수있는지가 우리 결정에 매우 중요하다.

형용사절

The man who is coming from that side is my uncle.
저쪽에서 오고있는 사람이 나의 삼촌이다.
One police officer fired his hand gun to the man who rejected giving up his weapon.
경찰 한명이 무기를 포기하지 않으려고 하는 사람에게 권총을 쏘았다.
I will keep this handkerchief she gave me the other day for my birthday.
나는 그녀가 몇일전 생일선물로 준 손수건을 오래 간직할 것이다.
The princess set out on his journey to save the prince who was captured by the witch.
왕자는 마녀에 의해 갖힌 공주를 구하기 위한 여행을 시작했다.

형용사절은 모두 관계대명사입니다. (관계대명사가 보이지 않은 것은 생략된 것입니다.)

부사절

When you get here, let me know.
이곳에 도착하면 내게 알려주거라.
She patted me on the should while she tried to persuaded me. 
그녀는 나를 설득하며 어깨를 도닥였다. 
He gave me some advice before he started the journey.
그는 여행을 떠나기전에 내게 몇마디 충고를 하였다.
As my newspaper didn't get delivered this morning, I will call to cancel my subscription.
오늘 아침 신문이 배달되지 않았기 때문에, 전화해 구독을 취소하려고 한다.

절은 기본적으로 접속사절과 관계사절도 나눠집니다.
접속사절은 명사적, 부사적 용법이 이에 해당되며
관계사절은 형용사적 용법이 이해 해당됩니다.

I know that you are coming tomorrow. (명사절: 접속사절)
나는 내일 네가 여기로 올것이라는 것을 안다.
We will open the champagne when she get here. (부사절: 접속사절)
우리는 그녀가 이곳에 도착하면 샾페인을 터트릴 것이다.
The captain leaded the team which had won the last three tournament. (형용사절: 관계사절)
그 주장이 지난 세번의 대회에서 우승한 팀을 이끌 것이다.
The girl who has a rose in her hand is this month queen. (형용사절: 관계사절)
손에 꽃을 들고있는 소녀가 이번달 퀸이다.

주절과 종속절

주절이란 문장의 틀이 되는 중심문장을 말합니다.
반면에 종속절이란  중심문장속에 부속품처럼 끼어들어간 하위 문장을 말합니다.

The man whom I met yesterday gave me the clue to solve this problem.  
주절: The man gave me the clue to solve this problem.
종속절: whom I met yesterday (I met him yesterday.)
어제 내가 만난 그사람이 그 문제를 풀수 있는 실마리를 내게 주었다.

We are running on the road which was built for the war in 1938.
주절: We are running on the road.
종속절: which was built for the war in 1938 (The road was built for the war in 1938.)
1938년에 전쟁을 위해 놓여진 도로 위를 우리가 달리고 있다.

As I did not hear him come in, I will call to remind him to come by.
주절: I will call to remind him to come by.
종속절: As I did not hear him come in,
