조동사 4 (may, might)

"may"는 가능성, 허락, 부탁을 나타내는 조동사입니다.

"might"는 may의 과거형이지만 현재형으로 더 많이 쓰입니다.

(현재형에도 쓸수 있고 미래형에도 쓸수 있습니다)

He may be upset. 

그는 아마 화가 났을수 있다.

You may catch sight of our house from the train.

The trouble may lie in the engine. 

문제는 아마 엔진에 있을 것이다.

Jack may be coming to see us tomorrow. 

잭이 내일 우리를 만나러 올지 모른다.

Oh dear! It’s half past ten. We may be late for the meeting. 

어이구, 열시반이네. 우리 미팅에 늦을지 몰라.

There may not be very many people there.

허락을 나타냅니다.

You may stay at my house as long as you like. 

너는 원하는 만큼 오랫동안 우리집에 머물러도 된다.

You may leave the table when you finish your dinner. 

저녁을 다 먹으면 식탁을 떠나도 좋다.

You may take one brochure. 

선전지 한장씩 가지고 가도 된다.

네가 가장 좋다고 생각하는 주제 한가지씩 선택할수 있다.

If you have finished the exam, you may leave the room. 

시험을 마치면 방을 떠나도 된다.

"may"는 비교적 부드러운 허락을 의미하지만 부정의 경우에는 강한 불허를 나타냅니다. You may not park your car in front of the gate.  문앞에 차를 세워서는 안된다. You may not take more than one brochure.  선전지 한장 이상 가지고 가면 안된다). You may not borrow the car until you can be more careful with it.  좀더 주의하지 않으면 너는 차를 빌릴수 없다. You may not take photographs in the museum.  박물관에서 사진을 찍어선 안된다. Visitors may not feed the animals.  방문자들은 동물들에게 먹이를 줘서는 안된다.

꼭 알아두셔야 할 사항이 있습니다. 불허를 의미하는 "may not"의 과거는 "might not"이 아닙니다. "was(were) not allowed to + 동사"입니다. You were not allowed to park your car in front of the gate.  You were not allowed to take more than one brochure.  You were not allowed to borrow the car until you can be more careful with it.  You were not allowed to not take photographs in the museum.  Visitors were not allowed to not feed the animals.

기원을 나타내는 경우에는 "may"가 문장 맨앞에 와야 합니다. 다음은 "주어+동사(꼭 원형)"입니다.  May you both live a long and happy life together.  여러분이 함께 오랫동안 행복하게 사시길 기원합니다. May the New Year bring you love and happiness.  새해가 당산에게 사랑과 행복을 가져다 주길 기원합니다. May all your wishes come true.  너의 모든 소원이 이루어지길 기원합니다. May the odds be ever in your favor. ("is"가 아니고 "be"임을 염두해 두시기 바랍니다) 운이 항상 너의 편에 있기를 기원한다. May the Force be with you. ("is"가 아니고 "be"임을 염두해 두시기 바랍니다)  군이 당신과 함께 하기를 기원한다.

어떤 조건하에 일어나는 일반적 현상을 나타내는 학술이나 과학적 표현에도 사용됩니다.

Drivers may feel tired if they do not take a break every 2 hours. 

운전자들은 매2시간마다 휴식을 취하지 않으면 피로를 느낄수 있다.

Adults may find it difficult to sleep if they use technology before going to bed. 

어른들은 잠자기 전에 전자기기를 사용하면 잠들기 어려울수 있다.

These tablets may produce serious side effects if not taken in the correct dosage. 

이 약은 정확한 양을 먹지 않으면 부작용을 일으킬수 있다.

may의 과거를 나타냅니다.

(다시 말해 may의 과거로 might를 사용하지 않는다는 얘기입니다)

It may have already been broken before you bought it. 

그건 아마 네가 사기전부터 망가져 있었을 꺼야.

What was that noise? It may have been a dog outside our window. 

그건 무슨 소리였지? 그건 아마 개였을 꺼야.

It’s ten o’clock. They may have arrived now. 

열시야, 그들이 지금쯤 도착했을 꺼야.

You were stupid to fight with him. He may have killed you. 

그와 싸우다니 넌 바보였어, 그가 널 죽였을지 몰라.

By the end of this month, I may have finished this work. 

이달 말쯤, 아마 나는 이일을 끝냈을수 있었어.

The wind may have blown them all away. 

아마 바람이 그 모든것을 날려보냈을 것이다.

위에서도 언급했지만 모든 문장에서 may 대신 사용할수 있습니다.

(may보다 공손한 표현이기 때문에 오히려 더 많이 사용됩니다)

It might rain later. 

이따 비가 올지 몰라.

I might see you tomorrow. 

내일 너를 만날수 있을지 몰라.

It looks nice, but it might be very expensive. 

좋아 보이기는 하는데 아마 비쌀지 몰라.

It’s quite bright. It might not rain today. 

상당히 밝아서 내일 비가 오지 않을지 몰라.

I might go to the movies tonight. 

오늘밤 영화보러 갈지 몰라.

She might be late because of the public transport strike. 

대중교통 파업으로 그녀가 늦을지 몰라.

He asked if he might borrow the car. 

그가 차를 빌릴수 있는지 물었다.

They wanted to know if they might come later.

그들은 늦게 와도 되는지 알고 싶었다.

뭐 하나 물어도 될까요?

모든 "may"를 "might"로 교환할수 있듯이 

모든 "may have + PP"를 "might have + PP"와 교환할 수 있습니다.

의미는 "may have + PP"보다 약합니다.

"may as well" "might as well"

"~~ 하는 것이 낫다" "~~ 하는 것이 좋을 것이다" 

I may as well be true to myself. 

나 스스로에게 솔직하는 것이 나을것 같다.

I may as well not go if you aren't going. 

네가 가지 않으면 나도 가지 않는게 좋겠다.

I may as well answer this question since no one else has. 

아무도 대답하지 않기 때문에 내가 대답하는 쪽이 나을 것이다.

We may as well  go back," said the son in Tom. 

"우리는 차라리 돌아가는게 낫겠다"라고 탐의 아들이 말했다.

There is nothing on TV. I might as well go to bed. 

TV에 별것없다. 나는 자러가는 것이 낫겠다.
